The American Planning Association has been around for over 100 years, and they have been a part of shaping the way we live, work and play.

Membership in American Planning Association

The APA offers a variety of different membership levels that range from student to lifetime membership. The various levels provide access to different resources and services on the APA website, as well as discounts on other products and services offered by the association.

In order to become an APA member you must be a registered planner with an accredited planning degree or have completed an APA-approved course in planning. You can also become a student member if you are currently enrolled in a planning program at an accredited university or college.

There are four steps in the process of membership in APA.

The A.P.A. offers many benefits for its members, which include access to a wide variety of resources and discounts on conferences, publications and other events offered by the association. The A.P.A.’s members also have the opportunity to get involved in advocacy efforts that are related to planning and policymaking across the country as well as volunteer opportunities with local chapters in their area.

American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP)

The American Institute of Certified Planners is a professional association that provides certification to those who have been educated in the field of urban and regional planning. Those who are the members of “American Planning Association” can only join AICP.

The AICP has more than 8,000 members across the United States and around the world. These members are planners from all sectors: government; private practice; education; nonprofit organizations; corporations; university faculty and staff; students, interns, and retirees.

Cost of American Planning Association Membership

The cost for membership varies depending on what level you are at but at first year it ranges from $22-100. The cost of an APA membership also varies depending on the type of membership that you choose.

There are four types of memberships: student, individual, business and institutional.

Student membership: It is available for students who are enrolled in a graduate program or undergraduate program in planning or related fields.

Individual memberships: It is for those who work in the planning field and want to support the association’s efforts to advance the profession.

Business memberships: It is for organizations that want to support the association’s efforts to advance the profession and be recognized as a supporter of planning professionals.

Institutional memberships: It is for institutions that want to participate at an institutional level and show their commitment to advancing professional planning through their support of APA programs, initiatives, events and more.
